municipality in the county of
Sogn og Fjordane, Norway.
Leikanger was established as a municipality January 1, 1838 (see
formannskapsdistrikt).
Balestrand was separated from Leikanger in 1850. The parts of Leikanger lying south of
Sognefjorden were transferred to
Lærdal and
Vik January 1, 1992.
The county administration of Sogn og Fjordane is located in Leikanger. The center of Leikanger/Hermansverk has 1965 inhabitants (2006).
Name
The municipality (originally the parish) is named after the old farm Leikanger (
Norse Leikvangir), since the first church was built there. The first element is
leikr m '
sports, athletics', the last element is the plural form of
vangr m 'meadow'.
Until 1889 the name was written
Lekanger.
Coat-of-arms
The coat-of-arms is from modern times (1963). It shows a twig of an
apple tree.
